'Creepy gnome' terrorises town

A TOWN in South America is living in fear after several sightings of a 'creepy gnome' that locals claim stalks the streets at night.
The midget - which wears a pointy hat and has a distinctive sideways walk - was caught on video last week by a terrified group of youngsters.
Teenager Jose Alvarez - who filmed the gnome - yesterday told national newspaper El Tribuno that they caught the creature while larking about in their hometown of General Guemes, in the province of Salta, Argentina.
He said: “We were chatting about our last fishing trip. It was one in the morning.

smoking TORTOISE

A TORTOISE whose owner claims it is addicted to smoking can apparently finish a cigarette in four minutes.
Owner Li Yun from the town of Kouqian in Yongji county, said his pet was addicted to cigarettes after it started smoking smouldering butts he left lying around his garden.
He said the animal is now addicted and he has timed it smoking a cigarette in four minutes, and gets upset if he can’t smoke half a pack a day.
He said: “Whenever I smoke the tortoise lifts its head out of the water and stares at the cigarette. If I don’t let it smoke, it swims around crazily in its little pond, scratching the sides.
“The tortoise won’t stop until I give it a cigarette and it bites the butt, and you can see the tip glowing. Within four minutes the cigarette is gone.”
Tang Jingwen, deputy secretary-general of the Jilin City Animal Protection Association, said they wanted to contact Yun over his claims.
He said: “If the tortoise smokes voluntarily there is little we can do, but we wan

"Samy call for the release of the Hindraf 5"-YA RITE!!!!!!!

S Samy Vellu’s call for the release of the Hindraf 5 from Internal Security Act (ISA) detention is a political ploy by the MIC president, alleged the Abolish ISA Movement (GMI) today.
"The demand made by the former works minister is dishonest and is apparently politically motivated," said GMI president, Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (right) in a statement.
He said the timing of Samy’s call for the release of the five was suspect as the MIC boss had never made such calls prior to the general election on March 8.
In a dramatic move, Samy, at an event at the party’s headquarters yesterday, publicly called for the release of the Hindraf ISA detainees as he said ‘there were no longer reason to detain them’.
The veteran politician said he would meet Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi soon to discuss this matter.
He also urged Hindraf chairperson P Waythamoorthy - who is currently in London in self-exile - to return to Malaysia, saying he latter was not a political refugee.
Samy’s call came in as a shock to many as he was among the government and BN leaders who had vociferously criticised the Hindraf movement prior to the arrests of its key leaders on Dec 13.
Meanwhile the wife of ISA detainee and Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M Manoharan today denied she had sought help from Samy Vellu for the release of her husband.
"I didn't go and see Samy Vellu," S Pushpaneela was reported by Star Online as saying.
Samy Vellu had on Sunday claimed that Pushpaneela had met him to discuss the matter.
Release all detainees
Hindraf has been credited for being partly responsible for the worst ever performance by the MIC in a general election following the March 8 polls.
Samy Vellu lost at his parliamentary constituency in Sungai Siput while the rest of the party’s top leadership fared no better, losing in all their respective constituencies they had contested.
Syed Ibrahim said Samy’s call for the release of the Hindraf 5 was a move necessary for him to regain the trust of the Indian community which saw Hindraf as a voice for their struggle against increasing marginalisation by the government.
"If he is really sincere about justice, why does he not call for the release of all 70 ISA detainees, all of which have been denied their basic right to a fair trial," questioned Syed Ibrahim.
He said GMI would continue to insist that the government release all the 70 ISA detainees being held and not just the Hindraf 5 as the detention of all the 70 was unjust and a violation of their human rights.

Becks' 100th cap

DAVID BECKHAM’S family are set to watch him reach 100 caps in Paris.
Wife Victoria, mum, dad, in-laws, cousins and possibly his three kids will be at Wednesday’s friendly with France.
The former England skipper dropped out of a practice session with LA Galaxy on Saturday — but it was merely precautionary.
Becks, who flew in to England yesterday, is confident he will be fit for training with Fabio Capello’s squad today.

Beckham glory bid

And he expects to become his country’s first centurion since Peter Shilton nearly 20 years ago.
The signs are Capello will use him at some point, probably as a second-half sub.
A source close to Beckham said: “He is so excited about being in the squad again.
"David loves playing for his country and it as if he has been called up for the first time.
“He knows he will have to prove himself in training if he is to get that cap.
“But he is ready for the challenge.”
Capello believes Becks, 32, could play an important part in World Cup qualifiers — even if it is as an impact substitute.
An England insider said: “David is still one of the best crossers and dead-ball experts in the world.
“He has not lost that by playing in the States and it can be an important weapon.”

Samy & Subra alliance-Supporters Not Happy

The move by MIC president S Samy Vellu and his former estranged deputy S Subramaniam to cast aside their differences to rebuild the party has angered some supporters.
Sources said many of Subramaniam's supporters are peeved that he made the decision without a proper succession plan in place.
"His supporters have no problems with Subramaniam taking over the party and rebuilding it. But they do not like the idea of him working together with Samy Vellu.
"Too much has been said and done over the past 30 years to bury the hatchet just like that. They want him to be president but what is being read between the lines now is that Subramaniam is helping his former nemesis revive his battered political career," they said.
His supporters feel that Subramaniam might as well start a new party and build it from scratch rather than making this "rash decision in the absence of concrete measures," added the sources.
Maika Holdings
Furthermore, sources also pointed out that there are many outstanding issues which have not been ironed out. "A prime example is Maika Holdings," they said.
Maika is the troubled investment arm of MIC helmed by Samy Vellu's son Vel Paari.
Subramaniam has been one of the leading figures in championing the cause of its shareholders, who have accused Maika of shortchanging them on their investment.
"An injunction was also filed by Nesa corporation (of which Subramaniam is president) against the sale of Maika's only profit making company Overseas Capital Assurance Berhad (OCAB) and the injunction has been granted.
"So what happens to the shareholders now? Will Nesa drop the case? Should it do this, it will only anger the community further," said the sources.
Another problem is positions in the party. "Who will decide on this, Samy Vellu or Subramaniam? Will it be Samy's men or Subra's men?" asked the sources.
"Both leaders should have sorted out these issues before announcing that they have reconciled their differences.
"Subramaniam's supporters feel that Samy Vellu should have announced his resignation and call for an early presidential elections and endorse Subramaniam as his choice for the top post.
"At the moment, there is nobody else in the party who can rebuild it following its onslaught in the March 8 polls. There is already talk of MIC grassroots joining PKR and this decision by Subramaniam may also motivate some of his supporters to do the same," said the sources.
Future in the balance
On that note, some of Subramaniam's supporters also feel that MIC has no future and that the former deputy president should move to PKR.
"In the past, people did not see a future in PKR or its leader Anwar Ibrahim. But after the elections, they realise there is a possibility of BN (Barisan Nasional) being toppled and Anwar becoming prime minister.
"Furthermore, with MIC losing support from the very community the party was set up to serve is as good as sealing its fate," said the sources.
However, a close aide to Subramaniam revealed that the 62-year-old politician has made it clear to his supporters that he will never turn his back on BN.
An observer also pointed out that with the opposition offering Indians high positions in its newly formed state governments, MIC and BN will have a hard time convincing the community of their relevance.
"The most MIC could get was one full minister post. But now DAP has appointed an Indian deputy chief minister. So people are wondering if the country may have an Indian deputy prime minister if the opposition parties come into power," he said.
Leadership not an issue
Meanwhile, MIC information chief M Saravanan welcomed the alliance and dismissed the suggestion that it can spark off another leadership tussle in the party.
"This is a good move, it shows that both the leaders are concerned about the party," he said when contacted this afternoon.
"Now is not the time to think about party elections and leadership, the focus is on winning back the Indian community. None of us should be thinking about who will be taking over. Anybody who thinks like that is not a true MIC man," he added.
Saravanan - who won the Tapah parliamentary seat - stressed that all quarters must now pit their resources together to rebuild the party.
MIC lost six out of nine parliamentary seats and 12 out of 19 state seats. Its president, deputy president, two vice-presidents, youth chief and women's wing chief were also defeated.
Samy Vellu and Subramaniam had been bitter rivals for nearly three decades. The feud culminated in the latter losing the number two post to the president's choice - G Palanivel - in the 2006 party elections

DAP HOPES FOR ANWAR TO MAKE COMEBACK SOON

The DAP hopes that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim can make a comeback as a member of parliament as soon as possible and help transform Malaysia into a healthy functioning democracy, its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today. The party would continue to work with its allies -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and non-governmental organisations -- on this, he said in his keynote address to party members, including the newly-elected members of parliament and state assemblymen at its 42nd anniversary and national convention here. Anwar will be able to hold political office after April 15 this year when the restriction on him to contest in elections and hold political positions is lifted. Lim said the DAP, as a party, "must at all times guard against complacency for just as Malaysians voted for DAP in this election, they can just as easily vote the party out should we fail to deliver." He said that in 1990, the DAP won a record number of state seats but within a single term, in 1995, it was "punished" by the voters and suffered one of the worst electoral defeats in its history

Hamilton victorious in action-packed Albert Park race

Lewis Hamilton’s win for McLaren at the Australian Grand Prix almost went unnoticed in Albert Park this afternoon - and that tells you just what sort of race it was. The 23 year-old Briton dominated an event characterised by safety car interventions following a series of dramatic incidents that all happened behind him.Hamilton would build a lead, lose it behind the safety car, build it again, lose it again. You get the picture. But if he was impressive here a year ago, he was even better on Sunday, never losing his composure as he took the lead of the world championship with almost insouciant ease.If it was a great day for McLaren, it was a disaster for Ferrari. Felipe Massa spun on the first lap and was then involved in an incident with Red Bull’s David Coulthard before retiring, and Kimi Raikkonen, having benefited from the second safety car intervention, slid off the road trying to pass McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen and undid all that work. Then his Ferrari let him down when he was running seventh with three laps to go.Indeed, McLaren should have had a one-two, but a third safety car intervention following a heavy accident for Toyota’s Timo Glock badly hurt Kovalainen’s chances as he had to pit when everyone had closed up. He dropped way back, was passed by Raikkonen, repassed him, then found himself overtaken by Renault’s Fernando Alonso as the Spaniard overtook both of his rivals in a wonderful move. After fighting back, Kovalainen repassed the Renault with two laps to go, only to have his car falter momentarily as they crossed the line for the 57th time. As he wiped oil off his visor he accidentally triggered the pit-lane speed limiter and a relieved Alonso pounced to head his former team mate home in fourth place.Ahead of them, Nick Heidfeld brought his BMW Sauber home an excellent second, chased by Nico Rosberg, whose Toyota-engined Williams was the fastest car on the track in the closing stages. It was the young German’s first podium. The race began with drama as an incident in the first corner involved Honda’s Jenson Button, Force India’s Giancarlo Fisichella, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, Super Aguri’s Anthony Davidson and Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel, and led directly or indirectly to their retirements. Jarno Trulli looked set for good points until his Toyota let him down, and Nelson Piquet’s debut for Renault was little short of disastrous as he trailed at the back and failed to make it home. Sebastien Bourdais and his Toro Rosso crew made a great call on strategy and were running fourth, ahead of Alonso and Kovalainen with three laps to go, but were stymied by engine failure. Force India’s Adrian Sutil and Super Aguri’s Takuma Sato similarly failed to make the finish.“The team did a fantastic job as always, and the car was phenomenal, a complete dream to drive compared to last year,” a delighted Hamilton said. “They pulled me in early on both stops and that kept us out of trouble. Physically the race was a breeze, and great preparation for Malaysia, so bring it on, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Lim apologises!!!!

The crisis which developed yesterday over the appointment of a PAS menteri besar in a DAP-led Perak state assembly seemed to have been resolved today.DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang who rejected the appointment of a PAS candidate today apologised for any offence caused to the Perak royalty over his statement.“My three-paragraph statement at 7pm last night that the DAP central executive committee emergency meeting on March 9 had not given approval for a PAS mentri besar to head a Perak coalition state government was not made out of disrespect to the Perak sultan and regent, both whom I have always held in the highest regard and I apologise for any offence caused," he said.“The statement was on the party position at the time. There have been further discussions and developments on the matter in the hours after the statement. Announcements of the latest position will be made.”This was immediately followed by state DAP chairperson and Sitiawan state assemblyperson Ngeh Khoo Ham who told Malaysiakini that whatever misunderstanding that occurred over the matter has been clarified.
He also said that all DAP elected representatives will attend the swearing in ceremony before the Sultan of Perak in Kuala Kangsar today at 4pm."The new coalition government stands united and has agreed to a collective leadership form of governance. All policy decisions of the new government will only be implement after the executive councillors of the state have approved them."
However, in yet another twist, PKR today issued a statement threatening to pull out from the coalition government on hearing that eight of the 10 executive council posts will go to DAP while the remaining two going to other parties.
Yesterday, just hours after the Regent of Perak agreed to the appointment of Pasir Panjang state assemblyperson and Perak PAS secretary Mohamad Nizar Jamaludin as the menteri besar, DAP leader Lim Kit Siang threw a spanner in the works, stating that his party had not approved to the appointment.Lim said that the party had only agreed to the appointment of a menteri besar from either the DAP or the PKR.He also said that all 18 DAP state representatives would stay away from the swearing-in ceremony for Perak mentri besar scheduled tomorrow.Ngeh and PKR’s Behrang assemblyperson Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi were the other two candidates who were in the running for the menteri besar post.Palace released letterYesterday, after meeting the regent, Nizar, Ngeh and Jamaluddin told reporters that the regent had agreed with the appointment of Nizar as the menteri besar and that Ngeh would be the deputy menteri besar (1) and an Indian candidate from PKR to be the second deputy menteri besar.Late last night, soon after Lim's statement was released, the Perak palace released the letter which stated that all three parties, including the DAP, had agreed to the decision of Sultan Azlan Shah.According to the letter, the three candidates had unanimously agreed to abide to the sultan's choice. The DAP's reversal today comes as a welcome relief to some who were worried that Lim’s stand would cause severe rift among the opposition not just in Perak but nationwide.Of a total of 59 state seats, DAP controls 18 seats while PKR has seven and PAS six, making a total of 31. The remaining 28 are in the hands of BN.
National interest above allMeanwhile, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said in Penang today that his party will place priority on national interest and the Perak royalty in handling the controversy. The new Penang chief minister also pointed out that he has issued a directive to all Perak elected representatives to attend the swearing-in ceremony this afternoon."I have decided as the DAP secretary-general that we should deal with party internal matters on a different platform. I want to look at the larger question - the national interest and secondly, to ensure our respect and loyalty to the Perak Sultan," he told a press conference.Guan Eng said this when asked to comment on his father's strongly-worded statement yesterday opposing the appointment of Nizar. He was met by reporters at the Dewan Sri Pinang after witnessing the swearing in ceremony of 10 state exco members this morning. When asked if the DAP accepted Nizar’s appointment, Guan Eng merely said he has asked all the party's elected representatives to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

Clash in Rusila, Terengganu

PAS Supportes in action.....not bad

KL stocks fall almost 10%

Malaysian stocks tumbled the most in a decade today with government-linked companies hardest hit after the weekend’s political upsets. At 2:58pm, trading was stopped for an hour as the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) fell 130.01 points to 1,166.32, from the previous day’s closing level 1,296.33 - about 10.03 percent.
Trading resumed at 3:58pm, and the stock market recovered slightly. After it closed for the day at 5pm at 1,117.2, a drop of 123.11 or 9.5 percent.
This was the biggest one-day percentage loss in recent years. The turnover was valued at RM2.47 billion.State-owned banks like Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings and government-linked companies such as Malaysian Resources Corp, UEM World Bhd and Sime Darby were among counters that registered falling prices.Construction-related companies hit
The ringgit also lost 1.2 percent, to RM3.198 to the dollar - the biggest depreciation since June last year. While most companies suffered losses, construction-related stocks were among the hardest hit.
Malaysian Resources Corp, the company that secured the Penang Sentral development project, plunged 66 sen, or 34 percent, to RM1.270.Sime Darby declined RM1.6, or 15 percent, to close at RM9.40 and Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings retreated RM1.4, or 13 percent, to RM8.80.
It is believed that investors fear political instability and that companies linked to the government could be affected by changes in policies as a result of Barisan Nasional's worst ever electoral outing.Circuit breaking triggered
According to a statement from Bursa Malaysia, the decision to halt trading this afternoon is to "maintain market stability and allow traders to consider new information before making investment decisions". "When the KLCI registers a 10-percent drop from the previous day’s closing level, the circuit breaker is automatically triggered." The one-hour break is to allow a 'cooling-off' period.
However, as investors unloaded local stocks, credit-rating agencies Fitch and Moody’s maintained their sovereign ratings on Malaysia. Despite acknowledging that the level of political uncertainty in the country had increased, the agencies said the economy is still on solid ground.

Penang CM: Guan Eng to be sworn in on Tuesday

Newly-elected Air Putih state assembly person Lim Guan Eng will be sworn in as the Penang chief minister on Tuesday.Speaking to reporters today, Lim said that the outgoing CM Dr Koh Tsu Koon wanted to be present at the swearing in ceremony but he would not be able to attend if the function was held tomorrow.Koh will be in Kuala Lumpur as Barisan Nasional chairperson Abdullah Ahmad Badawi forms the federal government. Abdullah is expected to seek an audience with the King tomorrow for that purpose.“We have no problem with that (request),” Lim, who is also the DAP secretary-general told a packed press conference held at a hotel in Georgetown, Penang this afternoon.Lim also won the Bagan parliamentary seat, leading the way for the opposition parties to complete an almost clean sweep in the state, which jointly took 29 out of 40 state seats. The DAP, which won in all the 19 state seats in Penang it contested, announced after the election results last night that it will form a coalition state government with PKR. Investor-friendly policies Asked on the role of PAS, which won one seat, Lim reiterated that the Islamic-based party is welcomed to help the new government. To another question on whether he expected winning the power of the state, he said he has not expected the extensive swing but sees politics as an art of possibility. The CM-designate turned those present - including all except two of the 29 newly elected representatives - into laughter when he was asked on whether he has ‘get used’ to the new role as a state leader.“I am not sworn in yet. The difference (so far) is that I found more press attending our press conference now and I am overwhelmed by the camera lights,” he quipped. He also said it was too premature to discuss whether there will be a major revamp in relation to the state exco portfolios. At the press conference, Lim pledged that the new state government will pursue an investor-friendly policies to ensure Penang retained its edge as the leading industrial and manufacturing region. He assured both local and foreign investors that the new state government will be fully cognizant of the importance of their major contribution to the state’s economy, and will put public interest first in the government’s policy and project. Problem over deputy CM post? Meanwhile, Penang PKR chief and newly-elected Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Mohamed Hashim confirmed that the party had set its sights on the deputy chief minister post in the new state government after winning nine of the 29 seats held by the oppositions."We are seeking (the) position of deputy chief minister," Zahrain said, when pressed by reporters at the separate press conference later.Zahrain declined to answer further questions on the topic, saying that both parties were still in the midst of discussions regarding the composition of the new Penang state government. He added that the main priority was to get Lim to be sworn in as the new CM.Despite Zahrain’s statement today, DAP sources have said the deputy CM post is likely to be removed although Lim has declined to confirm the speculation. On another note, Zahrain discounted the possibility that PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will relinquish her Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat for her husband Anwar Ibrahim to contest.“It doesn’t mean that Wan Azizah has to step down for Anwar. There are other means and ways for Anwar to be a representative” he said.In the election campaign, Wan Azizah has hinted that she may make way for Anwar, who is PKR’s de facto leader, to contest in a by-election should she win the Permatang Pauh seat.Anwar is only eligible to contest after April 15, when his five-year ban from active politics following his conviction on corruption charges expires.Wan Azizah has retained the seat with a larger majority of 13,388 votes.

Mahathir: We need an opposition

exclusive Three days before polling day, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad told voters that the country needs an opposition that can hold up a mirror to the government.“I believe in an opposition. I have always maintained that this country needs an opposition and they should be critical of the government without which we don’t have a mirror to look at our faces. We think that we are very beautiful but it is the opposition that keeps telling us (that may not be true). “You know the government member (of parliament), sometimes they are ‘ahli bodek’ (apple polishers). They are always saying ‘you’re right’, and you have no means of assessing whether you are going in the right direction or not.”He told Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview today that it would be a “disaster” if the country “loses its opposition” as in Singapore.Looking a little frail in his trademark bush jacket since his second heart bypass in September last year, Mahathir gave his prognosis on this Saturday’s general elections. He said the government would be able to retain its two-thirds majority but could lost a few seats in Terengganu and Kedah.Mahathir also predicted that the government would win between 70 to 75 percent of Parliament seats on March 8.In the 2004 general elections, BN won 90 percent of the seats. If Mahathir is correct, then the opposition could win between 55 to 65 seats, which will be a sizable increase from its current tally of 21.Mahathir also did not think the Barisan Nasional coalition would be able to wrest Kelantan state government from Islamic party PAS.“Kelantan would be a very difficult because although the margin is very small, Kelantanese have got a mind of their own, so to speak. If they are living in KL, they are very supportive of the government but if they are living in Kelantan, the peer pressure is very strong.”Mahathir also believed that the opposition would do well in Penang, but not enough to win government, or deny BN its two-thirds majority.

MIC may lose up to five seats

For three consecutive general elections, MIC has an almost perfect record in winning the seats it has contested. It may be handed a beating, by its standards, come Saturday.

As in 2004, the Indian-based party will contest nine parliament and 19 state seats, but it can no longer take the community’s support for granted. Across the country, Indian Malaysians have shown their anger at MIC, especially at its veteran president S Samy Vellu, for the party’s failure to uplift the community’s economic and social status since Independence.Even worse, they have openly challenged Samy Vellu to admit his failures and step down immediately. He, though, has put on a brave face, telling anyone who is prepared to listen that only the MIC can safeguard the community’s interests. He obviously doesn’t believe in gloom and doom, insisting that the 14 new faces being introduced as candidates will win. However, the parliamentary seats of Kota Raja, Teluk Kemang and Sungai Siput look shaky at the moment, with Kapar ripe for an upset. The state seats of Bukit Selambau, Lunas, Prai and Bagan Dalam seem almost out of MIC’s grasp, and the prognosis is critical in Seri Andalas and Batu Caves.MIC seems to be on the way to retain all the other state seats, especially those in Johor, Pahang and Malacca. The first signs of trouble for MIC appeared in Penang and Kedah last October, when Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders went on a nationwide tour lambasting the demolition of Hindu temples.Thousands of Indians attended their road shows in parts of Kedah and Penang. A MIC state representative was booed vehemently when he eulogised the work of Samy Vellu and his party.Further anger was provoked by the forcible dispersal of the Hindraf rally on Nov 25. A different form of dissent was triggered against the MIC when Hindraf leaders were detained under the ISA and the movement was labelled as extremists.Last week, Samy Vellu was heckled and mobbed in Kulim, while complaints have emerged about several MIC candidates' conduct

In Kedah, MIC is contesting the Bukit Selambau and Lunas state seats, which have a substantially high number of Indian voters - 29.5 percent (or about 9,000 voters) in Bukit Selambau and 22.5 percent (about 6,600 voters) in Lunas. In 2004, the margin of victory was 7,695 in Bukit Selambau and 4,299 in Lunas, but it will be difficult for the MIC to repeat its success this time around. It may find solace in the fact that it is facing an Independent in Bukit Selambau, and thus may well pull through by moving into high gear over the final days of campaigning. In Penang, Indian sentiments are against the MIC, which is also wracked by internal bickering. But the deciding factor could be that its candidates are facing fellow Indians in the Bagan Dalam and Prai state seats, thereby giving the voters in the community a real choice in the communal stakes. Both seats also have a high number of Indian voters - 22.3 percent (about 3,900 voters: 2004 majority 1,967) in Bagan Dalam and a whopping 35.8 percent (5,050 voters: 2004 majority 583) in Prai. Prai looks dead set to be gone, especially when the DAP candidate P Ramasamy has been well-received by voters. There is a local Independent candidate to contend with as well.MIC is also struggling to convince voters in Batu Caves and Seri Andalas, in Selangor, to retain its candidates as state representatives. In Batu Caves, MIC’s T Mohan is a new face with ample grassroots work behind him. However his candidacy is not welcomed by the local MIC divisions as he is an outsider.More importantly, it is an open secret that Malay voters were not happy with the incumbent who was dropped. The PKR’s Malay candidate and another Malay Independent will hope to take advantage of this. Mohan, though, expects to pull through. In Seri Andalas, incumbent A Kamala Ganapathy faces PKR strongman A Xavier Jeyakumar in a straight fight. There are about 12,800 Indian voters (33 percent), all affected by the Hindraf factor. If Jeyakumar can capitalise on their sentiments, he is assured of their votes but he must be mindful that he is up against an incumbent who had the support of other races as well in 2004. This will be a close fight but the MIC should win it.A surprise result is being predicted in Sungkai in Perak where MIC vice-president S Veerasingam takes on DAP’s A Sivanesan, a Hindraf lawyer. However, Veerasingam is a known face with a good track record. He is expected to win, but Sivanesan could take most of the 3,000-odd Indian votes.

More MIC Drama

The MIC candidate who was dropped at the last minute M Soorianrayanan denied an allegation by the opposition that he was boycotting the Barisan Nasional (BN) campaign for the Tebrau parliamentary seat in Johor.
The Tebrau MIC chief also denied the allegation that a majority of his disgruntled supporters had joined PKR.
According to Bernama, Sooriyanarayan said although he was sad at being dropped, he would still throw his weight behing BN.
"Every day I have three ceramah sessions, apart from meeting Indian voters in Taman Pelangi Indah and Kangkar Tebrau," he added.
Soorianarayanan, 60, was dropped as MIC candidate for the Tenggaroh seat at the last minute and replaced by Johor MIC Wanita chief T Murukasvary.
MIC president S Samy Vellu said the decision was made due to requests from Wanita MIC members who wanted a woman candidate.
However, Malaysiakini reported last week that there could be another reason for dropping Soorianarayanan.
It is learnt that he was allegedly investigated by the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) and his file has been sent to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for the next course of action.
But this has yet to be confirmed.
'Cheap tactic'
Meanwhile, Sooriyanarayanan also denied an allegation that he was not present during the nomination process yesterday, saying that it was a "cheap tactic" by the opposition to get Indian votes.
He said that he was together with BN candidates Abdul Halim Suleiman (Puteri Wangsa state seat), Maulizan Bujang (Tiram state seat) and Ling Ban San (Tebrau parliamentary seat) during the nomination.
Sooriyanarayan vowed to put his personal feelings aside and work hard to ensure that Indian votes go in favour of the BN candidates.
The percentage of Indian voters in Tebrau is the second highest in Johor at 14 percent and he would make sure that 90 to 95 percent would vote for BN on March 8.
He said that the government has always helped the Indians in Tebrau and provided various assistance including financial help to build Tamil schools and Hindu temples.
He cited an example where the government allocated RM1.5 million to build Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Ladang Ulu Tiram and a piece of land to build a Hindu temple.
Soorianarayanan pointed out that the opposition candidates who would challenge BN candidates in the area were "outsiders" who had never shown any interest in efforts do develop the area.

Unopposed: BN wins 9 seats, PAS 1

Barisan Nasional (BN) won seven of the 222 parliamentary and two of the 505 state seats unopposed when nominations closed today.
Meanwhile, the opposition won one through PAS' woman candidate Wan Ubaidah Omar who secured the Kijang state seat in Kelantan when the BN candidate Mustopha Ahmed was disqualified for having been declared a bankrupt.
This is a crucial bonus for PAS as it controlled 23 seats to BN's 22 in Kelantan before the dissolution of the state assembly, thus making every contest counts in the battle for the state.
In the 2004 general election, BN won 17 parliamentary and 11 state seats unopposed while PAS had took the Senggarang state constituency in Johor.
With this development, there are now 215 parliamentary and 502 state seats up for grabs on polling day on March 8.
The parliamentary seats won by BN are Sarawak’s Selangau, Kapit, Kanowit and Tanjung Manis, Sabah's Kalabakan and Pensiangan and Pengerang in Johor.
The victorious candidates are Joseph Entulu Belaun (Selangau), Alexander Nanta Linggi (Kapit), Aaron Ago Dagang (Kanowit), Norah Tun Rahman (Tanjung Manis), Abdul Ghafur Salleh (Kalabakan), Joseph Kurup (Pensiangan) and Youth and Sports Minister Azalina Othman Said (Pengerang).
This is second time lucky for Azalina and Abdul Ghafur, who both won their respective seats unopposed in 2004.
The state seats won unopposed by BN are Bugaya in Sabah (Ramli Marahaban) and Sementa in Selangor (Abdul Rahman Palil).
Three-way battles
Meanwhile, the elections will also be witnessing a series of three-cornered fights. Among the more prominent ones, there will be a three-way battle in Sungai Siput between MIC president S Samy Vellu, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) candidate Dr D Jeyakumar and independent Nor Rizan Oon.
The emergence of Billi Lim Peng Soon turned Kelana Jaya (P104) into a three-cornered battle. Along with the author and motivational speaker are PKR newcomer Loh Gwo-Burne and MCA incumbent Lee Hwa Beng.
Blogger-turned-politician Jeff Ooi will be getting his baptism of fire at Jelutong (P50). Besides Gerakan's Dr Thor Teong Gee, Ooi will face independent Badrul Zaman.
Among the other three-corner fights, the most surprising turns out to be Kuala Terengganu. Besides Umno incumbent Razali Ismail and PAS' Mat Sabu, an 89-year-old independent joins in the race.
Maimun Yusuf, a grandmother of seven, tried to contest four times previously but was rejected due to technicalities. She told the press that she aims to "right the wrongs and bring down the price of essentials".
Besides the common three-way battles, Sabah will also be seeing ten seats being fought by four persons or more. Among them are Kota Kinabalu, Kimanis, Penampang (P174) and Beluran.

Anwar Ibrahim's party to lead opposition in general elections in Malaysia

Former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim's opposition party will contest about half of the 222 parliamentary seats in Malaysia's general elections in a bid to make a strong comeback after its stinging defeat in the last polls when it won only one seat.

The People's Justice Party is looking to challenge the ruling coalition in about 100 parliamentary seats in the March 8 elections, though no final numbers have been announced yet, party general secretary Khalid Ibrahim said Thursday.
He said the party expects to win at least 30 seats with the help of campaigning by Anwar, who was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998 after a political fallout with then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
Anwar also was expelled from the United Malays National Organization, the main party in the ruling National Front coalition, and set up the People's Justice Party.
"Anwar attracts a lot of supporters and sympathizers," Khalid told The Associated Press. "Anwar will be bringing a new hope into the politics of Malaysia."
Once considered a future prime minister, Anwar's fortunes plunged when Mahathir accused him of corruption and sodomy. He was convicted of the charges and sentenced to 15 years in prison, but was released in 2004 after the sodomy charges were overturned by a higher court.
Anwar maintains he was a victim of a political conspiracy because he challenged Mahathir.
Although he was cleared of the sodomy charge, the corruption conviction barred him from contesting in elections until April this year. Anwar says Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who succeeded Mahathir in 2003, called elections in March to prevent him from contesting.
The National Front coalition, which won 199 parliamentary seats in a landslide victory in 2004, is expected to easily return to power but with a reduced majority given frustrations over inflation, rising crime and ethnic tensions.
Some observers say Anwar also no longer holds sway over the masses as he used to when tens of thousands took to the streets after his arrest and trial.
Malaysia's main opposition Democratic Action Front, or DAP, is expected to put up candidates for about 50 other seats, which will not overlap with Anwar's party, general-secretary Lim Guan Eng said. DAP now has 12 seats in Parliament.
The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, or PAS, is eyeing about 65 seats, but opposition parties are still holding last-minute negotiations ahead of Sunday's nominations on collaborating to avoid multi-cornered fights, according to its general secretary, Kamarudin Jaffar.

Knight Rider 2008

This two-hour movie event, based on the iconic 1980's hit television series, stars Justin Bruening ("All My Children"), Deanna Russo ("The Young and the Restless"), Sydney Tamiia Poitier ("Veronica Mars," "Grindhouse") and Bruce Davison ("Breach," "Close To Home"). In addition, David Hasselhoff (NBC's "America's Got Talent") -- who starred in the popular lead role as Michael Knight for four seasons during the original series' run -- returns as the same character during a special guest-star appearance.
As the original story resumes, the new KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand) is absolutely the coolest car ever created: its supercomputer capable of hacking almost any system; its weapons systems efficient; and its body -- thanks to its creator's work and nanotechnology -- is capable of actually shifting shape and color. Plus, its artificial intelligence makes it the ideal good cop partner: logical, precise and possessing infinite knowledge. It is the ultimate car -- and someone will be willing to do anything to obtain it.
The three cars featured in the series include the KITT Hero -- a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR that is playing the part of the everyday Hero car with 540 horsepower; the KITT Attack -- a super high-speed version of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR Hero car that transforms into Attack mode with the help of air-ride technology and specialized body parts -- and a KITT Remote, which is a driverless Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR version of the Hero vehicle.
Sarah Graiman is a 24-year old Ph.D candidate at Stanford University, following in her genius father Charles' (Davison) footsteps. But when men attempt to abduct her, Sarah receives a mysterious call from KITT warning her that he's a creation of Charles, who also invented the first KITT 25 years ago -- and that her father is in serious danger.
Sarah and KITT track down her best friend from childhood, Mike Tracer (Bruening), a 23-year-old ex-Army Ranger, whom Sarah hasn't seen since he left home at 18. Having served in Iraq, Mike is now jaded and lost and initially resistant. Eventually he agrees to help Sarah and the two set out to discover who's behind the attempt to procure KITT and find Charles. Along the way, Carrie Rivai (Poitier) plays the agile yet tough FBI agent who has a long-standing friendship with Charles and Sarah. Due to those ties, she is brought into the mix to help in the search.
Credits: Dave Bartis ("Heist") and Doug Liman ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith") serve as executive producers. David Andron is supervising producer and writer. Steve Shill ("Dexter" "The Tudors"), also a co-producer, directs the two-hour movie from Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Productions.

Total lunar eclipse

The last total lunar eclipse until 2010 occurs Wednesday night, with cameo appearances by Saturn and the bright star Regulus on either side of the veiled full moon.
Skywatchers viewing through a telescope will have the added treat of seeing Saturn's handsome rings.
Weather permitting, the total eclipse can be seen from North and South America. People in Europe and Africa will be able to see it high in the sky before dawn on Thursday.
As the moonlight dims -- it won't go totally dark -- Saturn and Regulus will pop out and sandwich the moon. Regulus is the brightest star in the constellation Leo.
Jack Horkheimer, host of the PBS show "Star Gazer," called the event "the moon, the lord of the rings and heart of the lion eclipse."
Wednesday's event will be the last total lunar eclipse until December 20, 2010. Last year there were two.
"It looks like it's going to be a hard one to spot," Seto said.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the full moon passes into Earth's shadow and is blocked from the sun's rays that normally illuminate it. During an eclipse, the sun, Earth and moon line up, leaving a darkened moon visible to observers on the night side of the planet.
The moon doesn't go black because indirect sunlight still reaches it after passing through the Earth's atmosphere. Since the atmosphere filters out blue light, the indirect light that reaches the moon transforms it into a reddish or orange tinge, depending on how much dust and cloud cover are in the atmosphere at the time.
Wednesday's total eclipse phase will last nearly an hour. It will begin around 7 p.m. on the West Coast and 10 p.m. on the East Coast. West Coast skygazers will miss the start of the eclipse because it occurs before the moon rises. Unlike solar eclipses, which require protective eyewear, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye.
Later this year, in August, there will be a total solar eclipse and a partial lunar eclipse

MIC: 13 new faces for state seats, 2 for parliament

MIC will field 13 new faces for the 19 state seats the party controls while changes have been made to two of the nine parliamentary seats.
Party president S Samy Vellu announced today that veteran vice-president KS Nijhar has been dropped from the line-up and will be replaced by S Murugesan for the Subang parliament seat.
Meanwhile, MIC information chief M Saravanan will contest in the Tapah parliamentary seat while incumbent S Veerasingam, who is also a vice-president, will be moved to the Sungkai state seat.
However, former deputy president S Subramaniam, who is widely considered Samy's key rival, is not on the party's candidates list. He was dropped in the 1999 elections but there were rumours of a comeback.
At a press conference at the Works Ministry in Kuala Lumpur, Samy Vellu said the party, which won all nine parliament and 19 state seats during the 2004 general election, would have to work "very hard" to repeat a clean sweep.
"We are anticipating a 100 percent victory, although we know this is not going to be easy," he said to a question on the apparent wavering support from the Indian community.
Samy Vellu said the party had identified three problematic state seats which are Lunas in Kedah, Prai and Bagan Dalam in Penang.
As for the parliamentary seats, Samy Vellu is confident that the party will retain all of them.
Three women candidates
To a question, Samy Vellu expressed confidence that the Indian community realises that MIC was the only party representing them in the government.
"People who instigate them to go against us are people who cannot represent them in the government," he said, in reference to the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) movement.
On why the party is only fielding three women candidates, Samy Vellu replied: "We would like to field more candidates but there are not enough seats".
A new rose among the thorns this time around is S Thangasvari who will be contesting in the Hutan Melintang state seat.
MIC would be fielding only fresh faces in four states - Kedah, Malacca, Perak and Johor - while dropping notable figures such as Perak MIC chief G Rajoo and Johor MIC chief KS Balakrishnan.
The new faces for state seats are S Krishnan (Bukit Selambau), S Ananthan (Lunas), L Krishnan (Perai), S Thangesvari (Hutan Melintang), Dr S Vasan (Pasir Panjang), Veerasingam (Sungkai), M Ramasamy (Behrang), T Mohan (Batu Caves), V Mogan (Jeram Padang), R Perumal (Asahan), M Munusamy (Permas), N Soorianarayanan (Tenggaroh) and R Vidyananthan (Kahang).
The six who would be defending their state seats are PK Subbaiyah (Bagan Dalam), M Davendran (Sabai), T Rajagopalu (Port Dickson), K Parthiban (Bukit Melawati), A Kamala Ganapathy (Seri Andalas) and M Asojan (Gambir)
Homecoming for Veerasingam
On the dropping of two MIC vice-presidents as candidates for parliament seats, Samy Vellu said that candidacy was not based on positions held in the party.
"We have to change seats from time to time," he said, adding that Veerasingam was moved to Sungkai in order to "take care of the state".
Speaking to reporters later, Veerasingam appeared upbeat about the latest development and looked forward to contesting in Sungkai, which he has won twice before in 1990 and 1995.
"Its not going to be a problem since I have a track record there and I know the people in the area," said Veerasingam, who was born and bred in Kampar, which is near Sungkai.
The veteran politician added that he would work together with Perak MIC chief G Rajoo to ensure MIC’s victory in the state.
Veerasingam, a former deputy minister, is likely to face DAP central committee member A Sivanesan who has been actively campaigning for Hindraf and is a known figure amongst the Indian community.

Rose Protest Goes International

Indians across the world demonstrated outside the offices of Malaysian embassies and high commissions on Saturday to condemn the government and police, hours after tear gas and water cannons were fired in Kuala Lumpur at people bringing flowers to persuade Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi to release five Hindraf leaders from detention.
The demonstrations – which took place almost simultaneously in New York, Los Angeles, London, Belgium, Northern Island, Indonesia, New Zealand, New Delhi and Mumbai – were believed to be the first internationally-coordinated action in support of the Indian cause in Malaysia.
Calling it a “rose protest”, Hindraf had said it wanted to give the flowers to the premier, asking him, among others, to release the five Hindraf leaders held under the Internal Security Act. The plan was initially to get a group of children to hand over the roses to Abdullah at Parliament. That, however, fell through when police blockaded roads leading to Parliament, forcing the supporters to group at Jalan Raja Laut instead. The police eventually arrested about 200 people and released all but nine whom they said defied repeated orders to disperse
Fiona Lee (photo), an ethnic Chinese from Malaysia, said in comments to Malaysiakini that she decided to join the protest in New York “because these are issues affecting all Malaysians.”“To me, the marginalization of the Indian community is very real,” said the 25-year-old, who has lived in the United States for seven years now and is pursuing a doctorate in English at the City University of New York.
“I grew up in Cheras and I belonged to a church group that used to visit Indian slums where the children had little access to education, food and even clothing,” Lee said. “To say they are being equally treated is the biggest sham.”
There were no officials from the Malaysian Consulate General’s office in New York to receive ay memorandums from the protesters. However several officials were seen snapping photographs of the protesting crowd.
Malaysians are who we are , when it comes to the well being of our own country men, i dont think its the colour of the skin or where we go to pray anymore and if you go to any street stall or settlement people love each other like brothers and sisters of Malaysia. We have very rear cases of extremist in this part of the owrld and if anyone thinks this is being extreme, they need a reality check!!

MANCHESTER 4 ARSENAL 0 (FA CUP 5TH ROUND)

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was proud of his side after they thrashed Arsenal to book a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
United won 4-0 and Ferguson said: "We showed great tenacity and the passing was terrific.
"It was a really fantastic performance - the players looked great.
"They were so disappointed with themselves after losing to Manchester City on a really important day but they have made amends for that."

However Ferguson was less complimentary about William Gallas, who was lucky to escape punishment for kicking Nani.
"I thought Gallas should have been sent off," said Ferguson. "The referee must have a look at that again.
"He kicked Nani from behind and the referee called both over because they sized each other up. He should've been red-carded."
United failed to get going against City on 10 February, in a game that came at the end of a week marking the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster

But they went at Arsenal from the start and United's assistant coach Carlos Queiroz added: "Everyone was attacking and defending together and we played as a unit all of the time.
"It is easy when you play like that because the best players in the team are free to produce the special moments in the game, which we did here.
"Are we surprised by how Arsenal played? No. Arsenal should be surprised by our performance.
"We showed that when we are on top of our game that we are a strong team."
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted his side were outclassed at Old Trafford.
"It was an off-day for us," Wenger said. "We were beaten everywhere and never looked like coming back.

When we had a go in the second half we had Emmanuel Eboue sent off and of course it was game over then.
"It was disappointing but this team has given a lot. We were up for it before the game but United were better."
Eboue saw red after a clumsy tackle on Patrice Evra and his was not the only wild challenge of the second half.
Some of the Arsenal players were angry when United midfielder Nani began showboating after his side had gone 4-0 ahead.
But Wenger defended his side, explaining: "We were incensed and most rightly so.
"It is difficult enough to swallow when you are three or four goals down - you do not want to be teased or humiliated."
The Gunners must rebuild for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against AC Milan on Wednesday.
And Wenger is confident that this drubbing will not have an adverse affect on the Gunners.
The Frenchman said: "We still have big enough targets in front of us.
"Now we will try to recover and prepare properly for our next game - we know we need a top-class performance against Milan to have a chance."

General Election

Angry youths surround and jeer Samy at school event
PETALING JAYA: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu was surrounded by some youths who jeered him during the ground-breaking ceremony for a new Tamil school here.
Samy Vellu was walking back to a canopy after performing the ceremony for the SRJK Tamil Seaport in Kampung Lindungan when the youths surrounded him.
The school is being relocated from Kelana Jaya.
MIC supporters quickly came in to help but Samy Vellu and the youths were already involved in a heated argument by then.
Police were called in and they escorted Samy Vellu from the area.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo was also at the ceremony.
Earlier, as Samy Vellu got down from his car, a group of about 30 people held placards stating that the land area for the school had been reduced.
After listening to their grievances, Samy Vellu assured them that the new school building would be bigger.
He said the new building could hold 450 pupils compared to the 150 now.
“We should be happy that an extra RM500,000 has been allocated to build this school at a cost of RM1.5mil,” he said

Some excerpts from Samy’s bold prediction for the coming election..
“Let us show to the country that the Indian community fully supports the Prime Minister and the Barisan Nasional.
“Let us prove in the general election that our destiny rests solely with Umno, MCA and other Barisan component parties,” he told the crowd, comprising mostly youths carrying banners and placards expressing support for Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Barisan Nasional.
“His ears are always open to listen and resolve the problems and grievances of all Malaysians,” he said.
Samy Vellu said Indians have been loyal supporters of the Barisan since the country’s first general election in 1959 and they will continue to rally behind the 14-party coalition.
“Nobody can deny this fact,” he said, adding that the party admitted that Indians did not form a majority in any parliamentary or state constituency.
Samy Talks
He (Samy) is right, the indian community fully supports ‘National Line’. Let us all vote out MIC ;p
